The Challenge

The City of Bayport requested that a local home builder clear out a large, mature forest basin area serving as a prominent outlot for a new residential development. The basin, which multiple future homes will directly overlook, had become heavily choked out by deadfall, thick buckthorn, and invasive undergrowth. This dense saturation of invasive species completely obscured the landscape’s natural beauty, compromised the health of the high-value mature oak trees, and created an unmanageable aesthetic eyesore for the incoming neighborhood.

Our Solution and Equipment

To tackle the massive volume of underbrush alongside the builder’s civil dirt work, we deployed our heavy-duty forestry mulching equipment to efficiently grind down the deadfall and dense buckthorn over a three-day period. On the third day, we brought in an additional three-man detailing crew to carefully hand-detail around the root zones and trunks of the mature oaks, safely exposing them without causing soil compaction or bark damage.

To protect the newly cleared hillside from severe weather, we developed a long-term erosion control and maintenance strategy for the future Homeowners Association (HOA). This includes plans to plant No-Mow fescue grass on the slopes for root-stabilizing erosion control, backed by a targeted broadleaf herbicide spot-spraying schedule to stop buckthorn regrowth in its tracks.

Specialist Notes

“Restoring this Bayport forest basin was all about revealing its hidden value. By aggressively mulching out the choking buckthorn underbrush, we gave these gorgeous, mature legacy oaks room to breathe and instantly upgraded the view for the entire future neighborhood.”
